What was particularly notable about the rescue of the crew of the Forrest Hall, on the evening of 12th / morning of 13th Jan1899?
Pure guess. I'm sure it was around that date so it could be the one at Porlock where they couldn't launch the lifeboat because of the high seas and so they manhandled it over a headland during the night, to launch it on the other side.
Family_Moose
6th February 2010, 05:54 AM

Ding to Roger.
The lifeboat was at Lynmouth but they couldn't launch due to the high sea. So 60 men and 100 horses pulled a 10 tonne boat & trailer up a 1-in-4 hill, over 15 miles of moor, down another 1-in-4 hill and launched from the beach at Porlock. They sent a team of men ahead with equipment to widen the tracks, cut down trees and demolish walls so they could get through. And they got everyone off alive.
Fascinating story if you ever get the chance to read it.

6th February 2010, 09:48 AM
Try this one then. Where is the M96 "Motorway"?

If you look on GE you can see a 4 car shunt on the "Motorway" and on the railway line it looks as though a car has hit a train on a level crossing.

Fianccetto
7th February 2010, 07:25 PM
I've just started reading Jude The Obscure (picked up on a secondhand books shelf somewhere) which had some biographical notes in it. Sounds romantic, but then why his heart would be buried with his first (estranged) wife, ignoring his second wife, puzzles me. Spose his second wife might have outlived him, still confusing. Funny lot, the Victorians.
OK, here's one. I haven't gone through all the previous questions to check it's not already there, apologies if it is.

OK I'll have a go.
The path looks like a railway track bed, the stones look like part of a Victorian lego set, the terrain is clearly hilly, so putting 2 & 2 together I'll guess
They're stones from a large construction project that was never completed.
The construction they were for was a railway viaduct.
They're on Dartmoor.
Probably all wrong, but you never know your luck.

Near Kings Tor, Dartmoor, the picture is the track track leading into Swell Tor quarry. The object in question are partially finished corbels for London Bridge which were never collected.

As a retired officer from Thames Valley Police, the Great Train Robbers featured large in my early years. Some of the instructors at Eynsham Hall Police College had been involved in the searches and subsequent prosecutions. We were all taken to the Force Museum and shown all the exhibits including the Monopoly board which they played on with real money !

I was too young to remember but I would be surprised if there wasn't an outcry in this country as AFAIK there were no plans for her return, which would have little effect on the Russians now and, at that time, even less.
