Is anyone using one of these for caching in the UK at the moment?

I have one on my xmas list, but I would like to hear any reports, good or bad from UK users.

I have an Oregon 400. It came loaded with an inferior version of Topo maps which didn't even include the Kennet and Avon Canal (85 miles long). I loaded Topo V2 which I had previously bought for my 60CSx which solved the problem. A 300 plus Topo V2 is definitely the way to go.

The Oregon itself is a great bit of kit. The touch screen is easy to use and much faster, interface for reading cache pages (GPX files) is excellent, logging caches in the field is really useful. I've definitely picked up some extra finds as a result of having all the information with me, Highly recommended.

What's the difference between the 300 and the 400?

What's the difference between the 300 and the 400?

About £50 and the 400 comes with preloaded European topographic maps at 1:100k scale, and they get a different paint job, otherwise they are basically the same.

A quick question about the touch screen.

Is it fragile? ie. I currently have a Garmin GPS 12 which has a very solid screen which can be bounced off rocks (regulary does!)

Touch screen is fine so far - 7 months and counting. occasionally it will place a waypoint where I didn't intend to have one, but otherwise it's really easy to use and and much easier interface.

Many thanks for your reply. Have found a total bargain offer for a 300, and was trying to find some negative views about it.

Anything has to be better than my current GPS 12 handset which weighs approximately the same as 2 african elephants.:)

I thought they were about the same weight, but:

weight of Garmin 12 - 269 g with batteries
weight of Oregon 300 - 193 g with batteries
difference 76g (the same a small wrist watch)

You're right there is a difference!

(2 small plastic elephants maybe!)

The important thing is that it doesn't feel and look like a housebrick...

although it has to be said that up-until we got into Geo-caching, the GPSR didn't really matter, as it basically is an arrow pointer to a co-ord...

Nevermind...must be getting fussy in my middle-age!:)

I retired my 12XL for a Oregon 300 too! Much better for paperless geocaching - not having to type in all those coordinates - bliss! Enjoy your 300!
