Aside from a tent and a crate of beer what's the minimum that this family of 8 cachers needs for a weekend or more of camping? We had such fun at Piratemania last year that we have decided to equip ourselves properly as we stayed in a bunkhouse there. Mr CHC thinks we need nothing but sleeping bags, a toasting fork and a torch but I think we must surely need more!

Thanks, Ness.

I'd take the following (in random order):

The tent & all bits and pieces, e.g. tent pegs, mallet, etc.
The sleeping bags
Pillows if required
The beer
Something to use as a groundsheet if the tent doesn't have one
A camping stove
Pots and/or pans etc. as appropriate
A paraffin lamp
Paraffin and matches or lighter
A powerful flash lamp
A torch
Some fold-up chairs
Things to drink from, eat with, etc.
Can/tin/bottle opener
Water container(s)
First aid kit
Waterproof clothing and footwear
Several changes of clothes for when you get soaked
If you've got little ones, things to amuse them when it rains
Whisky
And all the obvious, like gps, camera, pda etc.

And all the things I've forgotten...! :)

Don't try and be adventurous with food either...

Hot dogs are great camping food, as are bacon butties! One of my favourites is to take a frozen dinner in the fridge I'd already cooked at home and have it after the 1st full day there - so - keeps the fridge ultra cold, plus a great hearty meal after caching!

(oh - and frozen dinner does NOT mean a crappy shop bought one, I mean somethng like a chilli or a spag bol, curry or sweet and sour etc)

How long are you camping for? some of the things on Bill's list like the paraffin lamp may not be essential, especially if you're likely to be sitting round someone else's tent drinking after dark then do both sets of campers need to bring duplicate stuff?
Food-wise - fried stuff is tasty, but a devil to wash up after.
