Hello,
I am new to GPS and Geocaching, I have purchased a Garmin Vista HCX and have been using it to do my first few. It only comes with the basemap and I would like to upgrade to a better mapping system. I have been looking on the web and it would seem that the Garmin Topo is popular.
Is this the best mapping to use and if so is it better to get the CD or SD card version.

Thanks.

Don't expect footpaths and bridleways like on an OS map.

Worth taking a look at talkytoaster's maps, linked to on the UK side of Groundspeaks forum.

Latest OpenStreeMap UK Garmin Mapsets... (https://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=216453)

They are compiled from OpenStreetMap (http://www.openstreetmap.org/), with a few tweeks. Don't show too many footpaths etc., but are FREE.

The TOPO GB map is quite good (if expensive) but not up to Ordinance Survey standards. I've used it quite successfully for geocaching, relying more on its contour lines than paths when at a fine detail.

Its far better than the TOPO Europe provided with Oregons etc by the way.

Can you get to see it in a shop??

Not only that, but you can fix all the mapping errors you find yourself, rather than paying money to be stuck with the Ordnance Survey's rapidly deteriorating efforts. :socool:

I'm new to Geocaching too, and I use a Garmin Legend HCx. I bought the City Navigator maps, downloaded from Garmin for £37 I think. Brilliant investment, and really useful for city caches. So far every part of the UK I have been to has been on the map and very accurate.
