Newbie Checking In...

Hi everyone, I'm really new to Geocaching, that new that I havent even started yet :D

I just want to really make sure that I know exactly what I'm doing before I go searching for my 1st cache, I would hate to make a newbie mistake :o

I am always out and about walking my 3 dogs, someone once mentioned Geocaching to me saying that I could incorporate the two things together, so that what I plan to do.

My dogs are currently in training to search out tupperware boxes and such like :p

The first two should be OK for regular sized caches, but I'd save this one for hunting micros :)

There aren't really many do's and don'ts other than normal common sense and consideration for the environment/other cachers/non cachers, so get out there and welcome to the game,

When I had my first FTF (first to find a new cache) I had a friend's Border Collie with me and he found the cache for me! It was under a thorn bush where I'd already looked, but he went to a particular spot and kept sniffing there so I looked again, and yes, there it was!

Sorry, I forgot to answer the OP's request for advice.

You've probably noticed that caches are rated 1 to 5 for difficulty and terrain. Start with one which has a low difficulty rating, and which is a Regular sized cache. Small caches and micros can be much more difficult to find, especially if you have no experience.

You may want to start with one that has a clear Hint, in case you find yourself struggling to find it.

Also, it's good if you can get along to a local geocaching event. That's when cachers meet up for general socialising. You could meet others from your area who would be willing to take you to find a few caches so you get the feel of the game. Can you tell us where you live (roughly)?

There may be other events in the pipeline that have not yet been listed on the site. You can check on all forthcoming events in the UK by using the following link

and selecting the appropriate drop-downs i.e. Event cache > By State/Country > United Kingdom > Select 'Search All' or a specific region.

Thanks Mandy I will take a look at that, although I know I'm away all Easter competing with the dogs.
