May I, through the good services of your forum, thank most sincerely Mario McTavish (his caching tag) for giving up this morning to show me the ropes, go through the elements of operating the Garmin and taking me to two nearby caches.
There must be many techno-nervous types like me whose eyes glaze over when confronted with a 'users manual' and much prefer to learn by seeing and doing.
Mario has well over 2000 finds under his belt and has found at least one cache every day for almost a year. His enthusiasm for geocaching is evident and while I fall a long way short of his appetite for the activity (at present) I would not be in a position to go out independently with confidence without the help and support I received today.

Thank you, Mario.:applause:

Hi,
yet another "newbie" working my way through the threads - It does seem a bit technical and I wish we had someone near us to lead us into the light !! Managed to get my new Sat Nav out to 6 figure grid refs but won't go further So am waiting till end of month to buy a Garmin - meanwhile am trying to figure out local caches with hard copy maps
cheers

Might help if you can let us know where you are!
There is a thread over in the Groundspeak Forums (UK side) called Adopt-a-newbie (https://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=91205), -it sinks down a couple of pages, before being 'bumped up' -or just start a new thread asking for help.
You could also try asking in a local caching forum...

Or, instead of just directing people elsewhere.

Why not post something actually useful.

There's an event near to you in a week or two:
https://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=08a68d2f-0da4-4c57-997d-8b33b35812d9

11th april. You'll be made very welcome , will be able to chat to others and see what units they use. It's the best way i know to get newbies into the hobby.
