Rob, I saw the log for Maughold Head (http://www.trigpointinguk.com/trigs/trig-details.php?t=7585) today. The Passive Station database lists it as a surface block, but given the location that seems unlikely, as you say. The sketch (http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/stationpics/gif/C1SC4991.gif) probably bears out the Bolt theory too; the accompanying photo (http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/stationpics/jpg/C1SC4991.jpg)is more dramatic than usual, but entirely useless.

Just noticed Peel Inner Lighthouse Jetty (http://www.trigpointinguk.com/trigs/trig-details.php?t=7584)too. That just leaves 25 passives still be added to T:UK by my reckoning. :cheers:

Actually it probably would help - worth taking a copy of it plus sketch. Of course I had no prior plan to visit it: didin't realise it was there til it showed up on the POI en route to the nearby summit. Peel Inner Lighthouse Jetty is also a SB according to the Passives DB, which is daft. There are other examples - whoever compiled it was keen on SBs or didn't know the difference? Or does Surface Block have a wide range of meanings in OS circles?

I reckon the former. It has certainly happened before, though I can't think of any off hand.

I might be able to have a look at Maughold Head in the near future.

Yes, certainly looks like it.

Good stuff, more likely to be a bolt that anything else.

I may get chance to visit this evening. In the meantime, perhaps this will be of interest;

Thanks. I got caught up with various motorcycle-related events tonight though, so the visit has been postponed. But watch this space...

Well, I went in search of the bolt, and didn't find it. There's a lot more gorse than on the photo, and I suspect that it's under a particularly viscous little bush. I didn't have shears, gloves or knife with me; otherwise I might have stood a chance! I did spend half an hour there, and had the sketch map and photo to help. But it will take a return visit with better equipment, I think!

Hmm, yes, I get the black magic stuff, I just was unaware how it related to Rob. Though I suppose down there in the Fens has to be pretty rife with that sort of thing :ph34r:

Indeed. A summoner of dead threads? :dunno:

Bad luck HH - hope you score next time. I tried for several gorsy summit bolts on the Scilly Isles, largely unsuccessfully :(
