Archived cache find

Today I went looking for this cache: Thank You David Dear (https://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=80fcf1a5-455d-4936-a888-b5c02c01b923) (Cache 1)

and found this one too: It's Dear In Dundee, Or... (https://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=114150d0-4ea6-417a-b17a-bd13770b1601&log=y&decrypt=) (Cache 2)

I removed the box with it's contents thinking it was a Missing box for Cache 1.
My plan was to contact the cache owner and return the items, which were an unsigned log (with the GC code at the top) and a wooden coin.
Cache 2 was last found about a year ago and was archived in September. Cache 1 was placed as a replacement for the other by a diferent cacher.

Now do I log Cache 2 as a find even though it is archived?
(I did find it within about a foot of where it was supposed to be :p )

What do you think I should do with the cache and contents as the owner was contacted prior to it being archived, there was no reply and their profile shows them as not being active since 2007.
On further investigation I have noticed quite alot of their caches have gone =0(

In my opinion, first you were right to uplift the cache. This is often a problem when caches are archived due to the owner disappearing from the community leaving their caches to become Geo Litter.

Second you found it so you are entitled to log it - if you can. Sometimes archived caches are locked so that it is no longer to post logs on them.

Third as the owner had vanished to all intents and purposes and you (rightly) CITOed his geolitter I would hang onto it to use for maintaining other caches or to place a new one. Obviously, if the Travel Ingot Coin that ought to be there still is, it should me moved on soon and it would be nice to e-mail the owner to explain why their coin has suddenly risen from the dead. Alas the coin I found was a lucky wooden nickel and I can't see any trackable number on it :(

Something weird seemed to have happened just before the cache was last seen, a cacher had visited but logged not to have found the coins but a travel bug that was supposed to be in another nearby cache at the time (which is still travelling and was recently spotted so that one is doing well)

It is a shame that I didn't find the coin it would have been a good story it is also a shame that looking through the archived caches there were logs that mentioned his intent to replace or repair the caches then nothing =0(

Log 'em....you found 'em!

Good idea to lift the archived container, but keep it for a while before using it, and make a note on the cache page saying so. I know emailing the owner won't do anything, but you gotta do that anyway.

Log it - worst that can happen is the owner come out of hibernation and deletes your log.

Then celebrate by rehiding the cache as a new hide. The owner's not active so I wouldn't be too bothered about returning the container or anything. If they wanted it they had plenty of time to go and retrieve it!
