I have noticed recently that some caches appear to be off by a fair amount. I though it was just my GPS unit, however when i google map the coords it also comes off as way out.
So is google maps inaccurate?
Do/should people check the placements with google maps before publishing?

I've always found the Satellite image from Google Maps to be very accurate, I use it to check the co-ords on my caches, and also often use it as an aid when hunting caches.

Must admit we use it in the same way and always found it spot on.

We use google maps to check cache placements and they seem fine. As for inaccurate coordinates..... We are seeing a lot more caches placed where the coords are out by anything from 50 to 60 feet up to several hundred feet. The worst I've seen is 2 miles! In nearly all cases it is because they've been recorded with an iPhone (usually - or other phone GPS).

Google -Maps and Streetview- often show roadside caches as being in the middle of the road around here!
20+ feet off.

20 to 30 feet isn't that bad for a GPS anyway, particularly if there are buildings or trees. With Streetview if you pan around or move up and down the road the view does change and often shows a slightly different placement for the cache.

I check with GE on every cache I set. I find it more accurate. My GPSr is a Legend, about 6 or 7 years old now, and I find it to be, well, a bit out nowadays :)
