20th September 2010, 11:50 AM
We are now going to be running a monthly competition which is open to all registered GAGB Members, the rules of which are posted HERE (https://www.gagb.org.uk/category/monthly-competition/).
Normally the questions will be posted in the competition thread, in the members area, during the first week of each month and entries will close on the last day of the month in question.
To start the competition off the first set of question will be posted on Friday 24th September and the end date will be the last day of October.
The main prize will be a Geocoin for the first correct answer randomly selected from all of the correct entries plus a few other smaller prizes.
The questions will only be posted in the MEMBERS section of the forums.

After a flurry of entries over the weekend, I have received a total of 32 entries. Later today I'll go through the entries, double check that I haven't missed any of them... then I'll write out all the names, stick them in my best "Sunday-go-to-Meetings" hat and get someone totally unrelated to geocaching (Son Robin) to draw three winners.
Results will be posted here this evening.
By the way, the answers were

The first geocache listed in Europe was "Europe's First" GC43
and any three UK reviewers... Well, you all knew who they are... I don't really need to list them all, do I? :D

Having gone from only one cache owned for ages:o, we set another four very recently after sorting it with the local rangers. Now with a cache all ready to go, we had better get back on to them for a new location!:p

I see the answers now but still don't understand how I would get the first one in Europe. Or where I would go to get that. I suppose something to do with how you search for cashes?

I used Google (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=first+geocache+in+europe&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a) and it was the top listing.

I have a list of the oldest UK and Ireland caches in a PQ for GSAK, saved from someones bookmark on one of the listed caches...
I have found 2 or 3 from the list, so was aware of where to look!

Well done to ClareLouise whose name was drawn from the hat this morning :)
The answers for the November competition were
1. The site of the first ever geocache / now the original stash plaque. (I accepted either)
2. A geokrety is the equivalent of a travel bug.
Or, to be more accurate (Thanks to I! for this info, which I didn't realise...) "No such thing as "a" geokrety. A geokret is essentially a travel bug. Plural: geokrets, or geokrety."
3. World Geodetic System

The questions are normally so easy that almost all entries are correct.
