What is a Mega Event?
As the name suggests, a Mega Event is a very large social event, set up to attract at least 500 attendees from around the globe.
The first UK Mega Event in Harrogate, 2008, attracted over 900 people, and each successive year has increased that number significantly.
Geocaching in the UK has now grown so much that one other recurring event in England reached Mega status in 2011, the tremendous Piratemania, and 2012 sees another event in England aiming to also hit Mega status in it's first year.
This is why Mega Events placed under The UK Mega Event Committee Account will now be referred to as the Annual UK Mega.
Anyway, enough semantics.

Each Annual Mega has been organised with the aim of providing a range of side events leading up to the big day, including a linked Camping Event, giving a chance for attendees to make an affordable weeks holiday out of the fun, and ours will be no different. Well, that's not strictly true....
Our whole aim, since we started the planning of this event back in 2009, is to “do something different”.

Cartmel is set just half a mile south of the Lake District National Park, giving plenty of scope for interesting and varied events; of which we have already confirmed a night Bat Walk, and a Balsam Bashing CITO Event with South Cumbria Rivers Trust; and we have so many more in the pipeline.
The day after the event, the week's program will be brought to a close by an organised walk across Morecambe Bay, with the Queen's Guide, Cedric Robinson MBE (tides permitting).

The big day itself will be at Carmel Racecourse. Even though Cartmel is a small village, they are used to thousands of visitors descending on them for the races, and we've already found their hospitality to be second to none.
We are styling the event on a “Country Fair”; marquees, show ring, demonstrations and stands galore. The event is being organised with the full cooperation of the Holker Hall Estate, so there is much scope for a variety of new cache walks in the area.
Should the good old British weather play up, there are indoor facilities too.

We appreciate that many of you have families and partners who are not quite as “enthusiastic” about Geocaching. This was one of the things we kept in consideration when choosing our location. Cartmel has so much to offer to visitors, including it's 12th Century priory, and world famous Sticky Toffee Pudding shop.

Thank you to everyone that came along to the GAGB stand at the NW Mega Event (5th Annual UK Mega Event) last weekend.

Palujia (Paul), Mollyjak (Lilian) and Maple Leaf (Jen) from the committee were on the stand and it was lovely to chat to and answer questions from so many cachers.

The 'map game' was a hit and the proceeds of £130 were donated to the two Mountain Rescue teams (Duddon & Furness and Kendal) that were at the Mega event - they were most grateful.

If you are reading this post as a 'guest', then please register (it is free) and be the first to receive the complimentary Seeker (bi-monthly) newsletter and to be entitled to participate in nominating and selecting the new commitee in a couple of months time.
