Namely a Garmin Etrex Vista C with a 24mb memory it seems.

Where can we get an England map which will fit on it, or where can we get an East mids map if that is all that will fit.

Also where is there a beginners guide to the whole caching business as we are stumped on that one?

Thanks in advance

Welcome! :)

Maps.
Try over on the Groundspeak forums, UK and Ireland thread (https://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=35).

Talkytoaster has some free maps, and they are available in smaller sizes...

Scroll down for his most recent post, he updates every two to three weeks.
Instructions are there on how to load them.

If you want to get to know some local cachers (form the East Mids) give emcache.com (http://emcache.com) a try :)

Many thanks.

We have invested in a Garmin Oregon 300 and a map set from a very prompt person called Martin.

all we need now is for the two items to arrive and we can get going.

When the garmin arrives, if you register it via:
https://www.geocaching.com/garmin/freetrial.aspx
you can get 30 days trial of Premium Membership. Will help to get the most out of the unit.

Worth connecting it via the Garmin web updater, to make sure it's up to date.

And, just about the best site for info on the Garmin Oregon is: http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/

And for UK caching resources:
