OK. Bearing in mind that I am not well acquainted with Mr Nobbs's thought processes, I found it quite difficult to locate the number 8 above. There is a possibility that the sheep only has eight spots, but I feel that's unlikely...

Can I assume that he ate lamb for Sunday dinner?

Edgemaster
28th October 2006, 12:06 AM
*sigh* no-one wants to step up and guess what links this with 42. It's not as hard as you think, there are at least 8 solutions, anyway!

Oh well, if no-one wants to try, they'd better get on with posting #43!

nobbynobbs
28th October 2006, 05:19 AM
well the obvious one is there are 42 of them. anything more clever than that i'm afraid leaves me for dead as thatsort of thing is not my forte.

which is why i don't often do the really hard puzzle caches out there. :(

Mrs Blorenge
28th October 2006, 09:51 AM
Well...
I did think that they bottom line across should be binary 42  but then surely the bottom left ball ought to be blue, not white...
It's a long while since I had to think binary ;)
Have you actually got the solutions, Edge?

Edgemaster
28th October 2006, 12:10 PM
Correct, in fact every row is binary 42 (0101010). Just work out what links the balls.

And, yes there being 42 balls is also an answer.

Where to go next? What does the barcode show? Where on earth are we looking at?

And, yes, I have 8 solutions.

Edgemaster
29th October 2006, 11:17 AM
Ok, that's a cry for answers:
* How many spheres are in the diagram?
* Using Interleaved 2 of 5 encoding, what does the bar code on the white sphere on the left read?
* Considering red-hued spheres (red, purple, orange, black) as a '1' and those without as a '0', what number does each line represent in decimal form? (In binary, each line reads '0101010', or '42' in decimal form.)
* What number do the blue-tinted spheres (blue, green, purple, black) spell out? (Similar to a color blindness test.)
* What position in the grid does Earth occupy?
* What number is represented by Roman numerals spelled out by the yellow-tinted spheres (yellow, orange, green, black) in the first three rows? (XLII / 50-10+2)
* What is the absolute value of the degree of longitude the Earth is centered on? (It seems to be centered on Latitude 0° and Longitude 42°W)
* What is the number of green spheres multiplied by the number of blue spheres? (This is of course 6 × 9, the joke question from the second novel).

The puzzle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42_Puzzle) was originally concocted by Douglas Adams for The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

There certainly was something missing in the cache (https://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=85068e08-fa95-4060-91fb-008d0f347aef) we did this morning. <_<

I was referring to the different ways of putting the pieces together, where there appears to be a missing square (or squares depending on how it's done). :)

As to the missing item in the cache, hmm... Hopefully it's just someone who hasn't logged it yet - they might be out for the day and not log until this evening. Or they may be on holiday and not log until they get home.

 Ah, yes... comprendez now... I recall being given this geometry puzzle in an End of Term Maths class about ...ooooooh... several * years ago. It must have made an impression at the time as I still remember it. :)
As for that missing GJ, I hope it is a simple case of a cacher not having got around to logging it out of the cache yet... but it was rather odd that they hadn't even put a note into the cache log that they'd taken it. <_<

Oh, sorry, I missed the point that there was no log in the logbook - that does sound rather dubious! :( Hmm...
