Default Why does my nano have a chip in it?

    Hi All,

I'm new to geocaching, so please excuse any ignorance here, but I've just bought a couple of nano-caches, both coated, and decided that I would prefer one of them without the coating. I started scraping it clean, and saw the expected bare metal underneath until I started cleaning off the cap.

The cap was made of plastic and had some kind of chip embedded in it, is this something that's always in the lid of a nano? Am I being dim?

I've attached a bad, low-light cameraphone jpeg in case you can't figure out what I'm blathering on about.

    Thanks in advance,

    Vlad

they're originally part of a kids modelling game called magnetix. they originally have a battery inside and that "chip" is a small LED that flickers.

    Thanks both,

That's cleared that one up! I'm off to hide my cache/toy/earring now.

And there was me thinking it was some sort of extra terrestrial alien tracking device!

Heh, I was thinking it was possibly some kind of rfid, though I am a little miffed that the nano I bought wasn't quite as described - it was sold as steel, and I assumed I could just remove the coating if required.

Next time I buy a nano, I'm going to email first and make sure it's not a recycled ear-ring
