Hey,

I'm new to geocaching and I really want to get involved, but I don't really know how to start. I'd like to mayeb meet some other geocachers who can "show me the ropes", so to speak. Are there any local directories of geocachers or and members whom I could cantact? I live in Angus, Scotland. Thanks.

Not sure what they meant by that, must have been a mistake!
Welcome to Geocaching anyway!
If you stick around on the forums than someone from your area will hopefully pick up on the fact you would like a 'guide' and hopefully contact you. I can't think offhand if there are any cachers around you, but I'm sure there will be somebody willing to help you out as we are a nice bunch (usually!&#33. I'm sure there will ba a willing volunteer somewhere. Sorry can't help as we're on the South coast!

Me neither, but C&M have never struck me as the unwelcoming kind, so I'm sure they didn't mean anything unpleasant. Sorry I can't help, I'm about as far from you as it's possible to get, but if you ever find yourself in Hampshire, drop me a mail and we'll go and search out some of the finest pubs...oops, sorry, I mean caches...in the county.

Meantime, I'm sure some of our northern brethren will be in touch with you soon.

(Ah, think I've guessed it...the post has been edited. My guess is they wrote a reply [maybe offering to help], then realised you were further away than they thought. Then wrote what they did when they realised they couldn't delete their original post. Just a thought)

I know there are a bunch of cachers in Caledonia, evilrooster, Pooter, Firth of Forth to name but 3 that come to mind instantly. Why not post on the UK forum for geocaching.com and try to get in touch that way?

Cheers

PS I tried to paste the URL for the above in here, but each time I did so the middle bit was repalced by a bunch of dots.......... Can anyone else post it to help out?

I dunno !

Here we are the Geocaching Association of Great Britain, and we have a page "About Geocaching" see here, where it says, (at the bottom it's true)
The Geocaching Association of Great Britain was set up to forward caching in the UK and to help new cachers learn about the game. There are many sources of information about caching on the Internet, but when it comes to actually going out and finding the first cache, nothing can replace the actual experience.

If you are genuinely interested in geocaching and would like some help, the GAGB will try to find a cacher in your area who is willing to meet you and escort you on your first geocaching trip.

If you want some help, send an email to GuidePlease@gagb.org.uk.
And one of our committee members missed it

And a prospective committee member points somebody to the GC.com forums.

I dunno !

What's a guy got to do

Here's one we prepared earlier. :P

Sorry to take issue with Tim and June but I feel their criticism of other members and prospective committee members in referring an enquiry to look at the GC.com forum is unfair in the present state of development of GAGB. The enquiry was for someone local to give a hand - as yet I believe that request is more likely to get a response from someone in Angus on GC rather than GAGB. The response to the enquiry referred to was great and much to be applauded but I really feel it was fair to widen the field in the circumstances.
Enjoy your caching!

Jstead - I think Tim and June's comment was tongue in cheek, hence the variety of smileys. Just a guess - T&J may well want to suggest otherwise, but that's how I read the post.

Anyway - Welcome KJF!

Hope that you have a grand time out caching - unfortunately I can't help with going out on a trip with you at the moment, but business may take me north of the border soon (Dundee to be precise, and possibly next month) and so with a weekend free time or so, I'd love to give you a helping start.

Can't promise anything just yet - so don't take this as a guarantee. I'm usually all the way down south in Hampshire (or Norfolk at a push) but if I'm available, and in your area I'll be happy to lend a hand.

And don't forget Devils Advocate, he's from up north. Well just north of Sunderland anyway.

Hey,

Thanks for all the replies, that's been very helpful. I'll check out the other forum as you suggested.

... which made me think: what we need is a web page or a forum where the webmaster can post a note describing 'what's new' along with a suitable link

That way we can make sure we keep ourselves up ro date with what's happening on the site, and not miss anything exciting!

Paul
