    Default Permisson?...

Now you've found that perfect place for that cache, how do YOU go about finding who the landowner is...

Answers on a postcard, (or placed below as appropriate).

first look at map. see nearest farm. worth asking.
    nearby manor house.
    nearby pub.
    estate agent.
    postman, post office
    parish clerk.
rights of way officer at council.

    hope some of that helps.

Yes, everything that nobbynobbs said, and also (though it's probably obvious) ask anyone you come across on that land - if they're local they may know who owns it.

Ok so you've tried all that, and everybody says they don't own that bit of land, even tried the Land Registry, and all local authorities...

Can anybody suggest who else who might be worth trying?

Why not place the cache now?

In the unlikely event that the landowner later objects, at least you'll have flushed them out and you can explain how you tried unsuccessfully to identify them.

If it's that difficult to ascertain ownership, then surely they aren't bothered about who visits the land in question, so permission is most likely a courtesy rather than a necessity.

Remember that the vast majority of caches in the UK probably don't really have rock-solid official current written permission, even if many of them started off with some sort of agreement.

Hmm, difficult... That happens sometimes - I really don't understand how no-one can know who owns a particular parcel of land, but just now and again it does seem to be the case.

If you've tried all of the above, the only other thing I can think of is to try all the nearest properties.

I'm not a lawyer, but I believe there's a process whereby one can lay claim to a piece of land whose owner can't be traced... Now if you owned the land...

At the risk of being shot down for stating common practise - if it's not that obvious who the landowner is (signs/fences/car parking) and it's not an SSSI, scheduled monument or nature reserve, you could always place it anyway at your own risk - because the chances are if none of the above applies, nobody will notice.

Even in areas where the GAGB has negotiated permissions, you'll still see caches that (probably) didn't go through the process!!!! (in the past week, not a million miles from the centre of Brizzle)

That's often the trouble, people place stuff without even bothering to try to find the owner.

you've given it your best shot. like others have said... it's up to you to decide whether you go ahead without permission or not. If it's on a right of way you've atleast got permission to walk that way.
