Default Problem with eTrex Vista HCx

I've been geocaching in a fairly leisurely fashion since the Autumn. I have a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx which has always downloaded geocaches with no problem. This morning I tried to download and geocaching.com said (as normal) that the download had been successful. But it had not - nothing was showing on the GPS unit. I thought it might be a problem caused by putting AVG anti-virus software on the main computer but the same thing is happening on the notebook, which doesn't yet have it.

I've tried all sorts of things to fix this. I happened to have another (new)cable, so tried that. I downloaded the latest version of Garmin communicator 2.9.2.0 onto both the main computer and the notebook. I downloaded Version 3.20 for the eTrex Vista HCx onto the unit itself. Every time, the message is that the geocache has downloaded successfully and every time it hasn't.

Has anyone got any idea what is going on, and what can be done to fix things? I'd be very grateful

How are you sending to the GPS?

With 'send to GPS' from GC.com?
Does the pop-up page show your unit as being connected?
(AV software might stop the pop-up)

Are the caches more than 50 miles away?
The unit will only show 'closest' caches up to 50 miles.
If they are more than 50 miles search by name.

When did you last use the GPS?
Has it had time to acquire a view of the satellites, to know where it is..?

    edit to add:
What browser are you using? Wonder if Microsoft's Internet Explorer is up to it's old tricks...

    Hi B & R

I thought I'd give it another try this evening and it's just downloaded a cache perfectly. I know what people will be thinking - that I've done something differently, but I promise I haven't, and I did keep trying over and over again earlier. It's got me baffled.

Many thanks for coming back so quickly anyway - appreciated

    It happens!
Sometimes computers and kit need a break from things -don't we all!

Glad it's sorted itself out for you.
