    Default Tick awareness PLEASE READ

We are relatively new to geocaching, what a terrific activity the kids love it !

I wanted to find out how tick aware the geocaching community is ? I recently was diagnosed with Lyme disease, after being out with my camera on garden ground photographing wildlife and flowers. I always though ticks were an issue mainly for gamekeepers, hillwalkers etc. THEY ARE NOT ! I was bitten, I didn't know about the disease they carry . I was not TICK AWARE.

I wanted to make sure everyone is aware of the diseases they carry, the simple precautions you can take to avoid being bitten, the places they hang out eg. woodland, grassland, moorland anywhere that has wildlife/dogwalkers etc. As well as the symptoms to look out for if you have been bitten - you don't always know about it. They are most abundant April and May, and then October November but are present all year round.

Lyme is easily treated if caught quickly with the correct dose of antibiotics. But prevention is better than cure. Know how to PROPERLY remove them and how to pretect yourself and your family.

More information can be found at or

and if you would like to, please sign This is very much a hidden disease, no public awareness and no proper treatment on NHS, no public health announcements.

Globally infection rates of Lyme disease currently exceed those of AIDS

    Hi clangray,

    Welcome to the forum!

I started a thread on this issue in Mid May just to raise awareness but would imagine the majority of cachers have little or no awareness of the problem. Then again your average GP would appear to have the same problem regards awareness, symptoms etc.
