Default Committee election 2010 - hustings

Following "countrymatters" post in the election thread, I thought it would be useful if those people who have accepted nomination for election to the committee could provide a few lines of information about themselves here.

Please include any particular skills / knowledge which might be helpful to GAGB, and any particular area of GAGB which you'd like to support/drive next year including new functions?

This thread is for candidates to provide information in support of their election and will be closed when voting starts.

I'm semi-retired, and I live in the cathedral city of Salisbury in Wiltshire. I found my first cache on September 15th 2002. I've been a Member of GAGB almost since the beginning, and I served as a Committee Member before becoming Chairman.

My main contribution to GAGB has perhaps been rewriting our constitution, which had become increasingly outdated and unsuitable for an online organisation.

I stood down as Chairman in November 2009 due to ill health, but remained on the Committee. I've not been anywhere near as active in GAGB as I should have liked to have been over the last year, but now that my health is greatly improved I hope that if I'm elected to the new Committee I shall be able to take a much more active part in things in the future.

Fully retired and have been caching since 2008.
Served on the committee during the 2009 - 2010 year.
Interests include playing at web page design and tinkering with HTML & PHP to improve my knowledge.
If I am re-elected I will continue to look after the website and whatever I can find to do.

Not retired but work from home most of the time. Though in the summer I tend to be away a lot working at events.

Enjoy caching, live music and riding my motorbike not worked out how to do all three at once.

I mostly deal with phone calls to the GAGB and some email enquiries.

If elected I guess it would be pretty much the same again

    Default A bit about me!

I have been caching since March 2005 and have been an active member of the GAGB forums since coming across the GAGB website a few months later.

I live on the edge of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, but travel all over the UK and Ireland with my job (which is also a great way to fill in my counties map!). I have even been known to attend some mid-week events if there happen to be any close to where I am working/staying.

I prefer caches that involve a walk of a few miles leading to a viewpoint or an interesting feature rather than number chasing. Although at the moment I have a fratured ankle and limited mobility so cache finding has been put on hold ... but on the positive side, it has given me some time to work on solving some of the more devious puzzles. Hopefully, I will be able to get out and about soon - but I may well be looking for accessible caches.

Some of you will know me from the Mega event held in Weston-super-Mare in 2009. I was on the committee; along with Dave (The Wombles) and it would be a pleasure to work with him again - although the tables will be turned this time with him being the chairman! I had a major input into creating the Souvenir/Information booklet for the Mega event and also gained some understanding of the 'behind the scenes' workings of forums, websites etc (but far from expert yet!)

One of my aims, if I were to be voted onto the committe, is to help promote a better awareness of the GAGB throughout the country - possibly with regional events and promotional material.

I am not sure what specific roles/skill sets are required of a committee member, but I am happy to try my hand at most things, take ownership and see a project through to the end.

Well, if I started it, I should join in...I'm a freelance writer and photographer specialising in travel and the outdoors, with approaching 100 books to my name (lost count). The most recent to go to press was 'Geocaching in the UK', the first 'How to...' book on geocaching published in the UK. It will be out in January in time for a London trade fair.

I began geocaching just over 2 years ago, when my son threw down the challenge to write a book about it - I had just written 'Map Reading Skills' for a different publisher.

Although beyond retirement age, I still work full-time, and have recently completed guidebooks for walkers to the Isle of Mull, the Isle of Skye, Snowdonia, as well as a third edition of my guide to the West Highland Way. In short, I'm a guidebook writer, and I specialise in the UK, Ireland, France and Australia (to a lesser extent - it's not quite 'round the corner').

Currently I'm in writing retreat, as I'm researching for a PhD at Lancaster University, which commands all my attention between now and April, when I resume my travels. But on good weather days I am simultaneously working on a new guide to 'Great Mountain Days in the Pennines', along with a revision of my 'Yorkshire Dales Pathfinder Guide'. It's when I'm working on guides that I do much geocaching.

I am happy to work with colleagues in GAGB.

    Hi,

I am a 40 something project analyst currently working in the automotive sector in Coventry and living in south Birmingham.

I have been a Cacher and member of the GAGB since February 2006 but only active on the GAGB forums in the last 12 months - and a volunteer caching co-ordinator for the National Trust for the last four months. I have had a voluntary involvment in the new GAGB website, particularly the CITO section, and it is this area of caching I would like to focus on in 2011. For my sins I also update the calendar on a weekly basis....

Outside of caching, yes there is one, I enjoy walking, cycling, photography, nature and studying with the Open University for a BSc in Natural Sciences.

Well as I have been nominated I had better say something about myself.

I have been geocaching since January 2009 and have now clocked up 575 cache finds and 88 hides. I got in to it through our hens, but more of that another time.

Prior to setting up our own company I was a social worker, working with adults with learning disabilites. After 20 years of this I decided that work wasn't enjoyable any more, too much red tape and paperwork and not enough hands on support of the people that I was supposed to be working with. With big changes and much trepidation my friend and caching colleague Wemnog set up our own company.

I am now the MD of a car remapping company and travel up and down the country, sometimes even abroad (well the Isle of Wight actually) to map cars. This gives me the opportunity to visit caches in various parts of the country and to see the ingenious lengths that some people go to in their cache placements. I am, believe it or not, also a fully paid up member of the Women's Institute and bake for their country markets once a week.

I am a firm believer that caching is for everyone. This has sometimes caused consternation when I have said that urban nano's have their place in the game. As much as I love to go out for a trek to find a cache, there are other people who for one reason or another can only do drive by's.

I don't have a favourite size of cache, the smallest I ever found was a dog tag, the largest a suitcase. They all have their place in this wonderful game of ours.

Should I be elected I will strive to represent the GAGB to the best of my abilities, both on the forums and out in the community.

Well that's it in a nutshell.

I was a fully retired ex Policeman until "she who must be obeyed" lost her job in the melt down ! Had to start working again - So am now the night porter in a Country Hotel. Caught the caching bug from one of the other employees. We are both enthusiastic cachers, although "she who must be obeyed" can't walk too far.She is in charge of preparing the caches to put out ! We have put out one small series so far and are planning two more. Have just celebrated our 150th find. I am keen to help in any way I can, but admit to being the world's worst technophobe !!
