Thread: UK Caching Mileage 2011 (just for fun)

  1. #1

Default UK Caching Mileage 2011 (just for fun)

Would anyone like to join me in a UK mileage check next year. Basically I am going to get a new geocoin and activate it on Jan 1st, dip it in to the nearest cache to home, then dip it in to every UK cache that I visit next year right up until 31st December.

Just to see how many miles I actually cover for 12 months whilst caching. I won't be taking it abroad, just to caches in the UK. I think it should be one of the three UK coins that are about at the moment, either the GAGB coin, the Brittania coin from UK geocachers or my UK coin.

Each Sunday we can post what our total mileage is in a continuing thread.

Anyone up for it, just for a bit of fun?

Brill, and some people from Facebook have said they will join in, and become members of GAGB as well.

Quite fancy a go at this, have to get myself a coin though.

How do we keep the mileage accurate - do we dip in to nearest cache to home every time we come home? Otherwise it will just be mileage between caches found - e.g I may go south one week, back home, then south again - but the mileage from the last cache found one week might not be far to the first cache found the next week, whereas I will actually have come home and then gone south again.

If you see what I mean.

I see what you mean and it did cause me a bit of how to moment as well, I think it would be too much hassle to keep dipping it in to a local cache, unless it is your own. As it is just for fun it may be better to just dip it wherever you are caching, I know it makes it a bit less accurate but as it will log cache to cache it should be okay, I'll go with whatever other people think though.

Hmmm sounds good this. I have not figured out how to do the coin thing yet but I am sure I can figure it out!

I could do a simple graph and show who is winning. Maybe update it weekly.

MY GAGB coin is already travelling, I have ordered a Britannia coin, but if everyone thinks we should use GAGB coins, I'll go along with that.

The graph idea sounds good, but beyond my capabilities. So would be great if someone else could take it on.

Good excuse to find a local cache every trip/between trips, just to help keep the mileage up!

Don't worry I have something in mind for this one.

Okay I have just added a GAGB coin to my Christmas list!

I just need to get one thing straight. When we do this the way it works is the following (oh and this is coming from a person who has found 11 caches and never dared to take a TB):

    We have our own coin,
We register it on 1st Jan 2011,
We never leave it anywhere but log every find as left and taken,
I assume every time you log the above it automatically calculates the distance?

    Am I getting this right?

Edit: I was just thinking about the local log. I say any new find is good. If you do a 100 mile trip and back then thats 200 mile so long as you don't log it in a cache you have already found? What do you think about that?

    Ferme

Once you have a trackable in your 'inventory' you fill find two options available.

    1) Dropped off (this will place it in the cache)
    2) Visited (this will just show that you 'took' it to the cache, but it was just passing through)

    Both methods track the mileage.

There is also an 'Auto-visit' option .... but I haven't used this yet so not sure how it works and can't find any information in the knowledge books about it (my guess is that it will auto-visit every cache you visit ... which may be just what we need)

Go on, be brave ... go and find some trackables and help them with their missions.

Okay, I have had a few more thoughts after reading some of the posts.

I think dipping your coin in a local cache that you haven't previously done is the best way forward to keep mileage more or less correct.

I haven't used the auto-visit so can't assist with that one.

If everyone uses the "visited" option then we are all doing the same.

Sounds like it is going to be fun.

I think if everyone sets their coin off on 1st by either dipping it in to one of their own local caches, or a very local one to them, as I first thought, that would be a good way of starting it off.

Don't forget, this is just for fun, but at the end of 2011, I may just have something for the person with the most miles. (Don't get too excited about this though) cos it isn't a race.

Have a good day everyone, I am off to do a bit of caching in the snow.:socool:

But I don't have any local caches that I haven't done! (Apart from my own)

i did this for the 1st year of caching we did dipping in every cache we found ( which before the visiting option wasnt easy work ) and if you take off the 1200 miles for the german van at the mega it was about 3000 miles in total for the year.
i will be signing up for this its a laugh and see how far you travel in a year ...

I like the graph too, and yep, if you have done all the local ones, do a maintainance visit on one of your own, OR, lol lol lol set up a new cache a week.... I am ducking now in case you are taking a swing at me....

The other way to do it is to always dip back in to one particular cache of yours each time. I have one on our doorstep and if that is the way everyone agrees to do it, that will be the cache I dip in to.

I am loving the graph Fermi, brilliant and clear. Go for it. My coin arrived today that I will be using.

I may buy a GAGB coin, but would you have any objections to me using my unreleased Earthcache coin ?

  29. #29

I don't personally, I am using a Britannia coin, most are going to use GAGB and I think some are now going to use others, as it is a personal coin that you will be keeping I can't see a problem. What do others think?

It was Jacaru's idea originally, so I'm happy with his decision. Just that it is a new coin starting on 1st Jan.

Okay, having consulted the powers that be, meaning that having slept on it, these are the rules:~

    1. A new coin is activated on 1st Jan, would prefer it to have been one of the coins mentioned previously but I understand that some people may not want to purchase another coin.

    2. It visits a cache near to where you are on 1st Jan, that is either one of your own, or one that you visit on that day.

I've thought about this one as some of us may not actually be home on 1st Jan and it would give an unfair advantage mileage wise. I for one am going to be in Wales, so dipping the coin in to a home cache and then doing caching in Wales would knock the miles up right away.

    3. The coin doesn't visit caches twice

    4. The coin is only logged in to caches that you visit, this can include your own if you are doing a maintainance check, but again please follow Rule 3

I know this may mean that some people think it unfair if they are in a certain part of the country one day and then nearby again a few days later, and so only clock up a few miles, but if people travel lots to one particular part of the country often, they would have an unfair advantage over others.

    5. Importantly, remember it is only for fun

If I have forgotten anything, or there is something that you think should be added, let me know.

Better get my coin ordered then!

Just realised I won't be at home on Jan 1st either. Better get looking at caches in Delamere Forest. I know I did the nearest 3 last year.

Had the competition have been this year I would have probably done quite well as I have done a lot of travelling with work. I've so far clocked up 47,832 miles in 2010 between caches according to GSAK and I guess I'll end up just short of 50,000. I'll give it a go next year- I'll have to see if I can find some business on Pitcairn Island...

    Lightbulb UK Caching Mileage 2011

I posted this on the NW Forum, and quite a few intend to take it up. So, well done.

Would it be possible to finalise a set of rules? You have more or less done so, but it would be useful to post those as a definitive statement.

Yep, I'll do that now as a separate topic.

This game jibes very nicely with a planned personal project; I'd planned, from Jan 1st, to record my car mileage for the year, when used for caching trips. Combining it with joining in with this scheme is a no-brainer.

    I'd better get a coin..

I've just had another thought as well.. - I think I'll get two coins: one to keep for this game, and one to release on Jan 1st, to see how far it gets out in the wild

Great stuff, anyone else joining, get your GAGB coin ordered quickly, then keep it nice and warm until Jan 1st. Who will be the first to register their coin? Who will be the first to log any mileage? Who will be the first to get past 100 miles? 27 days until it begins......................

Can anyone joining in with the fun please let Fermentum know which coin you are using for it. That way the coin icon can be added along with your name to the graph that is going to be used.

Question - don't know if I'll be able to get a signal on my dongle where I will be for New Year - can I activate the GC before I go away, or does it have to be done on Jan 1st?

It is fine to activate it first, just don't long any mileage until 1st Jan onwards. Then start clocking em up.
