Default UK Caching Mileage 2011 (just for fun)

Would anyone like to join me in a UK mileage check next year. Basically I am going to get a new geocoin and activate it on Jan 1st, dip it in to the nearest cache to home, then dip it in to every UK cache that I visit next year right up until 31st December.

Just to see how many miles I actually cover for 12 months whilst caching. I won't be taking it abroad, just to caches in the UK. I think it should be one of the three UK coins that are about at the moment, either the GAGB coin, the Brittania coin from UK geocachers or my UK coin.

Each Sunday we can post what our total mileage is in a continuing thread.

Anyone up for it, just for a bit of fun?

Quite fancy a go at this, have to get myself a coin though.

How do we keep the mileage accurate - do we dip in to nearest cache to home every time we come home? Otherwise it will just be mileage between caches found - e.g I may go south one week, back home, then south again - but the mileage from the last cache found one week might not be far to the first cache found the next week, whereas I will actually have come home and then gone south again.

If you see what I mean.

I see what you mean and it did cause me a bit of how to moment as well, I think it would be too much hassle to keep dipping it in to a local cache, unless it is your own. As it is just for fun it may be better to just dip it wherever you are caching, I know it makes it a bit less accurate but as it will log cache to cache it should be okay, I'll go with whatever other people think though.

Good excuse to find a local cache every trip/between trips, just to help keep the mileage up!

    Hi Daryl.

I think it’s a great idea, which I will be taking part in, having ordered the new GAGB coin.

In answer to the question raised about how do you get the correct mileage, i.e. logging into the nearest cache to your home, here might be a solution.

Create a new cache listing at your home address or location near by. However DONT have it published.

You can drop coins in and out of this new cache which will show you the correct mileage.

I’ve seen this done so it should work.

    Many thanks Steve (Baira)

Hi Steve, thanks for that. I had thought of doing something similar, as you know The TARDIS is on our doorstep. However, this wouldn't work for some of the people joining in as they don't actually spend much time at home (lucky man Richard!!)
If anyone does have any solutions to get round this please do let us know.

What about having a GAGB unpublished cache set up somewhere in the country (suggestions please) that we start the coin off from and log it back in to after each cache visit, or is that over complicating things too much? It would have to be somewhere far and distant though so that everyone gets a good chance of logging up some miles. Top of Scotland or somewhere. We would have to get an agreement from the reviewers though.

An unpublished cache will only show up for the cache owner...
No-one else will be able to use it.

This will give some an advantage at the start, or not! We need to come to a decision. If everyone wanted to use one cache as the start cache and then log your coins back in and out of, you could use my home cache http://coord.info/GC1WGEQ

I know that it will give people extra miles at the beginning, but it may be a good base. I am struggling to think of a way around things to make it fair.

Steve I have added yours but will use your Geocaching name (hope thats okay).

Cheers Aligees I have now added yours.

Nick & Ali I have added yours, your not too late an yes your right it is UK only.

Matrix your coin is fine just so long as your first log comes on new years day or later!

That's a big 29 contestants now! But still 9 that I haven't got their number from. If you could get that to me asap that would be great.

Bear and Ragged I am not sure how this would be possible. I think you would need to measure the difference between every log for all 29 contestants. As you have said I think this would be a little difficult. If you know an easier way let me know.

This just gets better and better, thanks again to everyone for joining in. Wemnog still has to join GAGB and register his coin, I have the whip here to encourage him!!!!

Ferementum, is there any way that you can keep an eye with you super duper powers on if some of these coins visit the same cache at some point in the year. For instance, I will be down in Cornwall at some point and may just visit a cache that Dr D&V have visited with their coin. That would be another interesting thing to follow as well.
    Love the milestone awards too.

Every race needs a loser, and as I haven't been caching for ages I should be in with a pretty good chance of getting the wooden spoon!

    So here's my coin:

Sorry Jacaru it is possible but would take hours. I would need to make a note of every cache that a person does. And I remember Sandvika saying the other day he bashed out 70 something caches in a single day. If you have 30 players and it will be with Wemnog and everyone does just a single cache per day that would be 210 caches I need to log per week. Unless there is a way of creating a report?

    Hello all,

I have gone through all of the posts and think I got all of the information. I may have PMed you as I might have missed off a few.

Today I have done the following:

pieman I can't PM you for some reason asking for your coin info. (If anyone knows pieman please will you ask to send the info, thanks)

Captain gore-tex don't worry about the late arrival of your coin, I can backtrack and figure out your weekly mileage from the list.

Blid435, Redferret, Dan1980, Palujia and Wemnog, also countrymatters and walker clan- I now have your coin information.

Ryuchan I have your coin information but if its okay with you I will put on the graphs Team Noodles so I can match the coin and name up.

scubaclogger, DOSK, zarbi&zarbibird and Stuey - I have added your details and your coin information.

Just another thing as well. A few of the people I have added today seemed to think it maybe a little late to enter but that's not the case. I have noticed a coin shows all entries and the distance between that entry. I have no problem going back over (well for a few weeks, wouldn't fancy doing 6 months worth!) the logs and making a quick calculation.

    Thanks everyone

Just to clarify - are non-physical caches included? What about moving virtuals like YOSM? Won't they mess up the milage?

Might be better not to include YOSM.

AS you say it can mess up the mileage...
I use GSAK for stats and use corrected co-ords and lock the YOSM cache so the mileage is correct for my stats.

I have quoted from Daryl's original post so using his wording as a guide Northern Ireland is ok.

The Home page of the GAGB Web Site does actually say:
The Geocaching Association of Great Britain (GAGB) is the leading UK Geocaching body, recognised by and acting on behalf of cachers. The association was established in 2004 to provide a voice for its members in the United Kingdom

So it would seem that the competition covers the UK

    Default Rulz is Rulz

Is there any chance of posting the rules / guidelines? Maybe Jacaru can edit his OP so that the rules always appear at the top. If no rules are posted then I am going to cheat and log mileage on holiday in the next couple of weeks. We could have 5000 added by Monday! h34r:

Is there a rule about YOSM? I bagged one yesterday about 10 miles from home (about 4 miles from my previous cache) but get over 100 miles cos of where it is listed at the moment. Today I did a local cache and get another 100+ miles as the coin "returns" from where YOSM is listed at the moment. Would have been even better if it had been in Shetland or similar! I'm not moaning (in fact I'm benefiting) but it occurs to me that it does skew the mileage record somewhat.

I asked the same question earlier. I think that the consensus was that YOSM and other moving caches are banned for the purpose of the "race".

Is it too late to join in with this? Mr Smithbat got a travelbug t shirt for Christmas and we decided to dip him into every cache this year. We started at our nearest one, are we too late?
