View Full Version : Bad publicity in a video for Craghoppers

Craghoppers have posted this video on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_2mPrl1TZc&feature=youtu.be) which I feel puts UK cachers discussions with landowners back years.
I have sent an email to them complaining and informing them of my intention to boycott, and encourage others to do so, all of their products until such times as it is withdrawn. customerservices@craghoppers.com, I would suggest that as many as possible email with the same basic complaint.
Also something for the new Chair and committee to get their teeth into asap before too many landowners see it.

Already loads of negative comments below the video on youtube.
Think they might have blocked further comments - keep getting ERROR when I try to submit one.

Video 'disliked' and reported for being factually incorrect, company contacted via e-mail. Such a negative message requires strenuously challenging.

Looks like it has been up for at least a month with no response at all to any of the comments.

A little calm now please. I think they will have got the idea. Hopefully someone at the GAGB will contact them (today I hope). Calmly and rationally explaining the error and maybe getting an apology (a discount would be nice). I am sure many on here like and use their products let's not push so hard they get stubborn.

It was great of you to highlight it, its a shame they didn't react. I think they may have just discovered social media works both ways.

Just out of interest....do all cache listing sites disapprove of buried caches?

Just e-mailed Craghoppers and alerted our European and U.S. friends too. It appears that the video may have been withdrawn.

Looks like the video has been marked as private - rendering it inaccessible to all but those given a special hyperlink by the owner of the file - I'd say that's a win :applause:

Had a response to my email:
Dear Pete,
Thank you for your email.
As a company we sincerely apologise for the misrepresentation of
geocaching that has occurred in our lifestyle video: Craghoppers -
Software Developer by day, Geo Cacher at heart.
It was never our intention to falsely represent any of the activities
depicted in the videos. We recognise that with a little more research
we would never have been filmed geocaching in this way. We certainly
would never intentionally harm the campaigns in place to encourage
more people to enjoy the outdoors.
We've removed all videos showing the team digging up the geocache and
for any future projects any depiction of outdoor hobbies will be
scrutinised by the relevant experts prior to filming and publication.
We’ll also make sure that Groundspeak and any landowners’
organisations are aware of our mistake in an effort to undo the harm
this video may have caused the geocaching community.
We appreciate your passionate response and with the proposed actions
above we will make every effort to ensure that this won't happen
again.
Kind Regards

I've got home from work this evening to also find an email from the Managing Director of Craghoppers.
I've also been reading the posts on the GAGB facebook group and that Kate Holroyd from Craghoppers has joined the group today so that she can post/interact with the cachers.
This is the reply I received:
Dear Ms Harley ,
Thank you for your email this morning regarding our promotional video featuring geocaching.
You are correct in your assumption that we have had plenty of emails and comments over the last 24 hours , what a passionate bunch of people ! The video was indeed models and was set up to promote our clothing range and the many activities it can be used for !
I sincerely apologise for any upset that this incorrect representation of geocaching has brought, the video has now been removed from U tube and will not be used again.
As a company we are very passionate about the environment and in future we will endeavour to make sure that all parties involved in our brand, do the necessary research before we publish anything.
Once again thank you for your informative email and i hope that you will accept this apology in good faith.
Kind Regards

As Craghoppers seem interested in reaching out to Geocachers, I wonder if they might consider sponsoring GAGB
Could be a win/win

Apparently that's the production company who made the film. Craghoppers have already asked them to take it down.

Hi Guys,
First of all thanks for all your emails and comments on YouTube and Facebook. Apologies for the delay in posting up here - I've been trying to sort out the video and reply personally to all the comments.
Please see our official statement of apology from Jim McNamara, Managing Director, Craghoppers.

Welcome to the forum Kate :)
Video looks fine to me - albeit slightly less impactful for the lack of an appropriate 'reveal' of the geocache.
Thanks for listening and for responding so decisively
