I love the way this is catching on :)

Great graphs Fermentum, thanks for the hard work.

When deciding to take part in this fun game, I had already made a decision to record my driving and walking mileage for the year. Just for info, in these first 7 days, whilst my coin has racked up a little under 400 miles, I've driven 593, and walked 19.1 :)

Is there any chance of posting the rules / guidelines? Maybe Jacaru can edit his OP so that the rules always appear at the top. If no rules are posted then I am going to cheat and log mileage on holiday in the next couple of weeks. We could have 5000 added by Monday! ;)

Going to do the rules now.

Is there a rule about YOSM? I bagged one yesterday about 10 miles from home (about 4 miles from my previous cache) but get over 100 miles cos of where it is listed at the moment. Today I did a local cache and get another 100+ miles as the coin "returns" from where YOSM is listed at the moment. Would have been even better if it had been in Shetland or similar! I'm not moaning (in fact I'm benefiting) but it occurs to me that it does skew the mileage record somewhat.

I asked the same question earlier. I think that the consensus was that YOSM and other moving caches are banned for the purpose of the "race".

YOSM are not included.

Jacaru posted the mileage rules in a separate thread (https://www.gagb.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=3826) (sticky at the top of this forum) a few days ago.

Is there anyway of deleting the entry? Also please let me know the amount to deduct. Remember I am a newbie cacher and dont even know what a YOSM cache is!

Remember I am a newbie cacher and don't even know what a YOSM cache is!

Dave
http://www.yosm.org.uk/ Ye Ole Survey Monuments

It's a Grandfathered cache (No longer allowed to be set, but is allowed to carry on as a cache)

It moves around the country. It's Trig Pillars -Survey Monuments- which can be logged as a cache (there's no log to sign, just email the required info to the cache owner) and can be logged as a find from previous placements...

Hope that makes sense! Go and read http://www.yosm.org.uk/

I believe that if MJ deletes the YOSM visit log on his COIN page (not the find log on the cache page) and then selects "recalculate mileage" from the drop down box on the right then it should be correct. :)

Well spotted Stuey, whats happened is I took all of the peoples forum names and had them on the list, I noticed that Ryuchan was Team Noodles on the coin so I changed to Team Noodles. After last week when it was requested to sort alphabetically I sorted one with Ryuchan in and the other with Team Noodles in, so that meant a few went out of sync! Thanks for pointing it out, I have corrected it now.

After being more or less house bound since October with a fractured left ankle, I am at last going to start driving again tomorrow as have just got a new company car - automatic :)

So I will be clocking up plenty of miles in the coming weeks .... just need time to find some caches at the furthest points (although, they may have to be drive bys as I can't walk very far yet).

So let this mileage comp begin :p

One thing I have noticed with the Mileage competition as Walker Clan did it this week, is that I have no idea how many miles I currently have or anyone else has done (yeah I can check your coin page but everyone else doesn't have that information). I think this is the case because a few cachers are doing a heck of a lot more miles than others. So their tower is miles (forgive the pun!) in front. This dwarfs the lesser mileage cachers and therefore only a picture between a few people is noticed.

I am thinking of changing a few things this week so that it is easier to read and make a little more of a competition for the ones with lower mileage.

What does everyone think if I was to do a split between the top few and then the rest. Or even the top third, middle third and the lower third?

Or if you have a suggestion of your own please let me know!

Okay, I have had a few more thoughts after reading some of the posts.

I think dipping your coin in a local cache that you haven't previously done is the best way forward to keep mileage more or less correct.

I haven't used the auto-visit so can't assist with that one.

If everyone uses the "visited" option then we are all doing the same.

Sounds like it is going to be fun.

I think if everyone sets their coin off on 1st by either dipping it in to one of their own local caches, or a very local one to them, as I first thought, that would be a good way of starting it off.

Don't forget, this is just for fun, but at the end of 2011, I may just have something for the person with the most miles. (Don't get too excited about this though) cos it isn't a race.

Have a good day everyone, I am off to do a bit of caching in the snow.:socool:

Hello all,

I have added the week 6 graphs.

https://www.gagb.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=3796

I have changed the tracker graph and it now shows as 4 split graphs. I have done this because the top four are really running away with their mileage totals and it means that the rest of us are bunched up at the bottom and I think it was hard to tell who was beating who!

So with the new graphs, Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald you can tell who is ahead of who!

Let me know what you think of this new way.

Its the setting up that takes the time. Its all automated from there onwards appart from viewing each coin page and putting in the mileage that takes about 15 minutes. But to be honest with you I mess about with spreadsheets in my spare time anyway. I find it strangely relaxing.

You obviously missed rule number 17, part 5, sub section G. This specifically excludes anyone who has a driving job that covers more than 37.5 miles in a week......;)

I've also just realised that I have inadvertently broken the rules. The cache I first dipped the bug into (the one nearest home) - is one we have found before. Am I now drummed out of the competition?

I am sure you will be forgiven seeing that you have adopted out all your own local caches. I suppose we are lucky that you read the rule about 'no overseas' and didn't dip it in your Thailand cache

Rats! I didn't think of that! Do you think anyone will notice if I do?

I've not looked for a few weeks, and like the new league tables. I almost gave up in week 2 after seeing people with 1000's of miles per week, but at least I can look to the other league players, or to up to the next league above (and my 2 day trip to Scotland from Devon at the weekend will be useful!).

Thanks for doing the tables, nice one.

Thanks aligees, as DrDick&Vick have stated, my job involves travelling. I'm a delivery driver for SportsDirect. Most of the time I work with a colleague double-manning, hence I can be in Plymouth yesterday morning, then Keighley this morning. Drivers are issued their runs at random (to stop arguments), so I've no idea where I'll be tonight, but thanks to my c:geo app I should be able to find a cache somewhere.

I'm not apologising for taking advantage, after all, it's all for fun:p:)

Hello all,

A few things this week.

I have missed a person off 3fatties. Sorry you where in the Leagues but I didn't adjust the parameters for the Total and the Weekly amount. I have now corrected this.

Also Predictable Bob has been added, a new cacher that I think has already posted a few times in the forums. Welcome to you Bob! (I know we said entries are closed but I haven't turned anyone away yet so didn't want to start and do that!)

DrDick please could you prune the thread, its taking a while to load again but I think it maybe something to do with my connection as its slow on all sites not just GAGB.

I think Slightly Tall Paul needs a big round of applause for hitting the 10,000 mile mark. :applause: A BIG well done to you!

And finally I wanted people to post a few ideas on how we can improve the mileage fun competition as, judging by the number of posts over the last few weeks people are losing interest (I might be wrong about this though?)

I bet Slightly Tall Paul is glad he isn't paying his own fuel bill ;) - looks like we will need some more 'awards' soon if he carries on at this rate.

Are Bill D (wwh) and Pieman holding out for the last person to get off the starting blocks. Although it looks like Bill made a flying visit to see the Apollo Fir on the 1st, but couldn't get the coin through border control :D

My personal challenge is to catch svk616g - each time I get close, they sneak away. I haven't been far in the last couple of weeks, but should make up for it next week as I have lots of miles to drive (just hope I have time to stop for a cache or two).

Hello everyone

Hope you are all fantastic! Well the weather is hotting up (finally) and the caching weather is starting to come about! Week 15 stats are now online. Can't believe it has been 15 weeks since the start of the year and the fun competition.

One thing I found this week for me is that the weather was that good I had no chance picking up any caches because when we went to GZ there was simply too many people about. I loaded the GPS up before we went and when we got back about 2 hours later I went to log my DNFs and Beauchief had set a mini series along the exact spot we just had a walk, was gutted because I could have had my first FTF! Never mind!

Well done to everyone this week, a good few miles have been put on the board and between the lot of us we have racked up 77 thousand miles!

One thing while entering the miles this week I wondered what percentages of that total 77k slightly tall paul had made up. So I calculated it, and then did myself as well. And I thought I would share it with you all seeing I had done it! I have left the miles in there as well so you can see exactly how may behind the person above you is.

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/9085/week15percentages.jpg

As you can see the top four (Diamond League) make up 45% alone! Leaving the other 55% of all mileage to be split between the other 43 of us.

Some other things that I had a look at this week with the 77,812 miles we have gone.

The average distance that the moon is away from the Earth is 238,855 miles. We are about a third of the way to that and about a third way through the year (at the end of April). So at the moment we are on course to Cache to the moon in a year! How cool is that!!!!!

I then stupidly looked to see if we could cache to the Sun. 93,000,000 miles! So if we achieved the Cache to the moon in the year it would take us 389 Years to the sun! So some how I don't think we are going to be able to, maybe with more in the competition next year!

Another fantastic one to compare our joint efforts is, round the earth is just short of 25,000 miles which means we have already cached around the globe 3 times!

We have covered the distance to walk to the top of Mount Everest and back down again 7,046 times.

We have gone down the length of the Nile 18 (almost 19) times! And down the Amazon 19 and a half times.

Just found out the longest word is 189,819 letters long but it is disputed to whether it is a word. (Thought I would throw that in!)

Here is one that took me a minute or two to work out. Today 15/04/2011 is the 105th day of the year. Which means there has been 2,250 hours in the year, which therefore means there has been (as of midnight tonight) 151,200 minutes. So we are at the moment averaging 1 mile every 1 minute 56 seconds. To find out how many minutes it takes you to do a mile simply take 151,200 and divide by your miles. Don't forget if you have an answer of say 2.5 that is 2 and a half minutes not 2 mins 50 secs.

Really enjoyed doing the mileage tonight and am hoping I have more time like tonight to throw a few more things in. Let me know what you think. Always love to hear from you all.

HAPPY CACHING!

Picking up on the comment about whether people are losing interest, I still follow the graphs every week. I know I'm never going to win or even join the Diamond league, but I'm enjoying the race in the Ruby league by finding at least one cache every time I travel for work. We're hoping to do a deal with a new customer in Totnes, which will certainly help.

The week after that maybe a little touch and go because I am going away the Saturday to Cornwall. Which means I will be coming back the Friday after and I don't think I will be up for an update after a 7 hour or more drive.

So potentially 3 weeks will not be updated but I will try and get it done.

Couldn't resist taking a picture of our Dipper Coin and our GAGB coin together.

Looks like the 'competition' is stuttering to an early end if the mileage cant be regularly recorded, it was good whilst it lasted.

I'm just wondering if it it feasible to do a monthly chart rather than try to do a weekly one ...... I know how quickly the weeks go by and they seem to go even quicker in the summer! It would be a shame to see this competition fade when we are over half way through ..... but at the moment I haven't got the time to commit to helping you.

And the competition was your idea Daryl ! :(

Is there anybody else that isn't bothered about participating anymore - if so, let us know here (or via pm) as there is no point Fermentum (or anyone else) wasting their own time checking trackable logs if they aren't going to change.

I don't see why it has to stop just because Fermentum can't do the weekly updates for now. Those interested can still continue visiting their tracker to caches and at the end of the year someone will be the winner.

You're right. I shouldn't have said "winner".

I'll rephrase my post above as "Those interested can still continue visiting their tracker to caches and at the end of the year someone will be declared as The Furthest Travelled in Pursuit of Geocaches.

I've rarely checked on the weekly mileage graph anyway, I've just been visiting my Blorenge Dipper as often as I remember to do it!

Agree with you John. The competition element came into it when Daryl mentioned possibly gifting a geocoin to the cacher whose GAGB Milage Tracker had covered the most miles.

Disappointing that the person who originally suggested the event has given up, especially when he suggested an event longer tracking period!

I'll keep dipping mine until the end of the year, I'm currently on a work-assisted 22080.3 miles, but I'm also dipping my cachemobile (TB in the nearside rear window) to give a more accurate figure of the milage that I cover when not in my HGV. Just for fun, of course!:)

We're still interested and are still dipping the GC. It's a shame that the weekly update charts have now stopped as we always looked forward to seeing where we stood every Friday but I understand that circumstances change and everyone's time is at a premium. Unfortunately we neither have the time nor the knowledge to take over from Fermentum.

As you say Paul, it is just for fun and for me part of the fun was seeing the graphs weekly. When Fermi found that he didn't have time (and who can blame him) to do it regularly the fun element went out of it for me.

Sorry that it disappoints you that I have given up, but it is a personal decision and doesn't affect whether others decide to continue or not.

Hello everyone I hope you are all well.

I have managed to do a catch up for 9 weeks (can't believe its been that long). So it will show as a long line for 9 weeks. The weekly one is an accumulation of the 9 weeks as well.

Sorry I haven't had time I know everyone loves to check it out. I will try and do it more often.

Lonewolf, nice to see you on the forums, it seems a long time since we met in Bolton that day! How is Dobpet and son? Send me your coin details and I will add you in the next update (hopefully not in 9 weeks time!).

Bobbinz thanks for offering, it is a lot of work looking up 50 different peoples mileage and then putting them into 6 graphs! I wouldn't expect anyone to do it who isn't involved.

LFC4eva, I for some reason had a lot more mileage for you for the last update so I have corrected that, no idea what I did there! Oh and also I would like to point out that Hull City beat Liverpool the other week end 3 - 0! Woohoo!!!!

Hopefully thing will get better now that the nights are drawing in and I am not hectic on the weekend.

Yeah - well done.

I was only thinking yesterday that we could do with an update on everyones mileages - I don't mind going through and looking up the individual coins if Fermi can do the graphs.

Also, I should go through the 7,500 this week (if I get time to find a cache whilst I am working north of the border) ... but there isn't a rosette for that number :-(

Sorry for not updating in a while (again).

I have done a full update from weeks 35 to 46 today. I have said up to 04/11/2011 but its actually today. I thought it would be better to keep it as a Friday date for when I do the next one (probably the end of the year the way its been going.)

Some may notice Matrix has the most since last time but I have put Slightly Tall Paul as the winner since last update because Matrix coin went to Florida and back, which was outside of the UK. I have however not taken them miles away because I haven't checked everyones.

I know it is 'just for fun', but seeing that we are this far through the year I feel that the overseas visits should be deleted just to try and keep the miles/graphs fair (as per the rules (https://www.gagb.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=3826) in January)

I noticed last night, that Matrix's wasn't the only coin to go for a little holiday to the sun

Into the last month now and I've crossed the 8,000 barrier but doubt if I will get another rosette before the end of the year.

However, I am a long way behind the leaders - it looks like 'Slightly Tall Paul' is going to break the 30,000 barrier very soon ..... and I expect he will be the clear winner. I hope Santa has his prize ready :)

But I think Slighty Tall Paul should have done another couple of caches just to get over the 30,000. Looks like you are definitely the winner.

Don't forget, this is just for fun, but at the end of 2011, I may just have something for the person with the most miles. (Don't get too excited about this though) cos it isn't a race.
