View Full Version : UK Caching Mileage 2011 (just for fun)
Jacaru
26th November 2010, 07:31 AM
Would anyone like to join me in a UK mileage check next year. Basically I am going to get a new geocoin and activate it on Jan 1st, dip it in to the nearest cache to home, then dip it in to every UK cache that I visit next year right up until 31st December.
Just to see how many miles I actually cover for 12 months whilst caching. I won't be taking it abroad, just to caches in the UK. I think it should be one of the three UK coins that are about at the moment, either the GAGB coin, the Brittania coin from UK geocachers or my UK coin.
Each Sunday we can post what our total mileage is in a continuing thread.
Anyone up for it, just for a bit of fun?

I'll join you ..... with one of my new GAGB coins.
I will activate it on 1st January.

Quite fancy a go at this, have to get myself a coin though.
How do we keep the mileage accurate - do we dip in to nearest cache to home every time we come home? Otherwise it will just be mileage between caches found - e.g I may go south one week, back home, then south again - but the mileage from the last cache found one week might not be far to the first cache found the next week, whereas I will actually have come home and then gone south again.
If you see what I mean.
Jacaru
26th November 2010, 05:59 PM
I see what you mean and it did cause me a bit of how to moment as well, I think it would be too much hassle to keep dipping it in to a local cache, unless it is your own. As it is just for fun it may be better to just dip it wherever you are caching, I know it makes it a bit less accurate but as it will log cache to cache it should be okay, I'll go with whatever other people think though.

I could do a simple graph and show who is winning. Maybe update it weekly.

MY GAGB coin is already travelling, I have ordered a Britannia coin, but if everyone thinks we should use GAGB coins, I'll go along with that.
The graph idea sounds good, but beyond my capabilities. So would be great if someone else could take it on.

Don't worry I have something in mind for this one.
Okay I have just added a GAGB coin to my Christmas list!
I just need to get one thing straight. When we do this the way it works is the following (oh and this is coming from a person who has found 11 caches and never dared to take a TB):
We have our own coin,
We register it on 1st Jan 2011,
We never leave it anywhere but log every find as left and taken,
I assume every time you log the above it automatically calculates the distance?
Am I getting this right?
Edit: I was just thinking about the local log. I say any new find is good. If you do a 100 mile trip and back then thats 200 mile so long as you don't log it in a cache you have already found? What do you think about that?
Maple Leaf

Ferme
Once you have a trackable in your 'inventory' you fill find two options available.
1) Dropped off (this will place it in the cache)
2) Visited (this will just show that you 'took' it to the cache, but it was just passing through)
Both methods track the mileage.
There is also an 'Auto-visit' option .... but I haven't used this yet so not sure how it works and can't find any information in the knowledge books about it (my guess is that it will auto-visit every cache you visit ... which may be just what we need) :dunno:
Go on, be brave ... go and find some trackables and help them with their missions.

27th November 2010, 08:00 AM
Okay, I have had a few more thoughts after reading some of the posts.
I think dipping your coin in a local cache that you haven't previously done is the best way forward to keep mileage more or less correct.
I haven't used the auto-visit so can't assist with that one.
If everyone uses the "visited" option then we are all doing the same.
Sounds like it is going to be fun.
I think if everyone sets their coin off on 1st by either dipping it in to one of their own local caches, or a very local one to them, as I first thought, that would be a good way of starting it off.
Don't forget, this is just for fun, but at the end of 2011, I may just have something for the person with the most miles. (Don't get too excited about this though) cos it isn't a race.
Have a good day everyone, I am off to do a bit of caching in the snow.:socool:

i did this for the 1st year of caching we did dipping in every cache we found ( which before the visiting option wasnt easy work ) and if you take off the 1200 miles for the german van at the mega it was about 3000 miles in total for the year.

I like the graph too, and yep, if you have done all the local ones, do a maintainance visit on one of your own, OR, lol lol lol set up a new cache a week.... I am ducking now in case you are taking a swing at me....
The other way to do it is to always dip back in to one particular cache of yours each time. I have one on our doorstep and if that is the way everyone agrees to do it, that will be the cache I dip in to.
I am loving the graph Fermi, brilliant and clear. Go for it. My coin arrived today that I will be using.

It was Jacaru's idea originally, so I'm happy with his decision. Just that it is a new coin starting on 1st Jan.
Jacaru
28th November 2010, 07:27 AM
Okay, having consulted the powers that be, meaning that having slept on it, these are the rules:~
1. A new coin is activated on 1st Jan, would prefer it to have been one of the coins mentioned previously but I understand that some people may not want to purchase another coin.
2. It visits a cache near to where you are on 1st Jan, that is either one of your own, or one that you visit on that day.
I've thought about this one as some of us may not actually be home on 1st Jan and it would give an unfair advantage mileage wise. I for one am going to be in Wales, so dipping the coin in to a home cache and then doing caching in Wales would knock the miles up right away.
3. The coin doesn't visit caches twice
4. The coin is only logged in to caches that you visit, this can include your own if you are doing a maintainance check, but again please follow Rule 3
I know this may mean that some people think it unfair if they are in a certain part of the country one day and then nearby again a few days later, and so only clock up a few miles, but if people travel lots to one particular part of the country often, they would have an unfair advantage over others.
5. Importantly, remember it is only for fun
If I have forgotten anything, or there is something that you think should be added, let me know.

Had the competition have been this year I would have probably done quite well as I have done a lot of travelling with work. I've so far clocked up 47,832 miles in 2010 between caches according to GSAK and I guess I'll end up just short of 50,000. I'll give it a go next year- I'll have to see if I can find some business on Pitcairn Island...

Its easy to maintain on a weekly basis so don't worry about that. I have used the GAGB coin on all cylinders, this can be changed to suit coin if anyone is different. I can also make them any colour you want and maybe add a GAGB background instead.
If you dont like the black and white again this can be changed to any colour of the rainbow. If you are having difficulty reading anything please say and I can change to help out.
Please let me know so I can change it to suit everyone! Also I have a few other things up my sleeve but only Jacaru will know about that until we start the competition!

Hi Daryl.
I think it’s a great idea, which I will be taking part in, having ordered the new GAGB coin.
In answer to the question raised about how do you get the correct mileage, i.e. logging into the nearest cache to your home, here might be a solution.
Create a new cache listing at your home address or location near by. However DONT have it published.
You can drop coins in and out of this new cache which will show you the correct mileage.
I’ve seen this done so it should work.
Many thanks Steve (Baira)

Hi Steve, thanks for that. I had thought of doing something similar, as you know The TARDIS is on our doorstep. However, this wouldn't work for some of the people joining in as they don't actually spend much time at home (lucky man Richard!!)
If anyone does have any solutions to get round this please do let us know.
What about having a GAGB unpublished cache set up somewhere in the country (suggestions please) that we start the coin off from and log it back in to after each cache visit, or is that over complicating things too much? It would have to be somewhere far and distant though so that everyone gets a good chance of logging up some miles. Top of Scotland or somewhere. We would have to get an agreement from the reviewers though.

This will give some an advantage at the start, or not! We need to come to a decision. If everyone wanted to use one cache as the start cache and then log your coins back in and out of, you could use my home cache http://coord.info/GC1WGEQ
I know that it will give people extra miles at the beginning, but it may be a good base. I am struggling to think of a way around things to make it fair.

Okay I am not sure I get you on this one. I don't see a problem with an all start at the same cache as I can set the spreadsheet to deduct your first log (meaning set it to 0 miles).
I am not sure about setting up a new cache as I have never done this and have no idea where to start.
Also thinking about the log back to home everytime I am not sure why? Do we not just log the coin as visited to every cache we do to get a mileage count between caches instead of Home Log, Cache 1, Home, Cashe 2, Home, Cache 3 etc? Would we not do Home, Cache 1, Cache 2, Cache 3 etc.
As you know I am new to this so please spell it out with an example so I can get my head around it?

I propose:
Start the coin at a cache.
(May be your own, or a cache close to home that you have found previously. Or find or are near to on the day -1st Jan)
Dip/Visit each cache as you go along.
Coins can only be Dipped/Visited in a cache near home IF YOU FIND IT, or it's yours and you do maintenance on the visit.
*(Caches can only be found ONCE!)*
Coin is Dipped/Visits its first cache on the last day of the year to end the race?* This cache is the only exception to the One Visit rule.
Any other suggestions/improvements or disagreements to this?

Must admit that I am getting confused :dunno: (Senior Moment type thing) as I thought it was a simple case of activate and dip it in near home and then in every cache you visit. Not re-dip it when you go back home.
It just seems to have got very complicated for a fun game. :socool:

I agree Richard. We don't want to get bogged down with ever changing rules, my fault as much as anyones.
On 1st Jan, dip in to a cache near home
From there on, dip in to every cache you visit.

But if we do that it's not a true record of our caching mileage, is it? When I go caching, there is the mileage from here to the first cache, the second cache, etc, and at the end of the day or weekend, the miles back home again.
Say today I went 30 miles north and tomorrow I go 30 miles east, I'll have done 120 miles plus the miles between the caches - but the mileage won't show anything like that much. And if I went north again then it would be nearly 60 miles down.
If I can dip it on a maintenance visit then I can get round it 'cos I've got 32 caches of my own within 4 miles of home, but not everyone can do that.

Average week for me:
Monday - Oldham
Tuesday - Shrewsbury
Wednesday - Sheffield
Thursday - Plymouth
Friday - Bury, Lancashire.
I have no need to log a cache close to home, I get the mileage North/South anyway. (See Weds, Thurs, Fri -North, South, back up North)
-The only problem is time to find a cache! But I'm working on it!!)
However... If you live near the sea (or a river) you are suddenly limited to the direction you can travel.
Doing two caches on different days 60 miles from home, but only 1 mile apart can result in a coin only logging 61 miles, for the 240 miles someone has traveled, unless a cache near to home is also logged...

Totally see what you mean. But has everyone got a cache on their doorstep? I am okay as I have a cache 0.2 miles away. Also my start location will be different as I am 100 miles away from home over new year with family. Would I log one near family so I don't get 100 miles head start?
Also another newbie question from me. Can you log earthcaches and all other types of caches with a visit from a coin?

That's why 'Visit' was implemented by Groundspeak...
So Coins could record a visit to Earthcaches.
Does it actually work? Dunno, never tried it. :dunno:

If I use my cache local to my home as my start and re-dipping point I will automatically get 250 miles while I am staying down in the Sth West (6months).
The original post said
Would anyone like to join me in a UK mileage check next year.
My intention was to simply activate, dip and the dip in every cache I go to and have a bit of fun with it.
Sorry but it has just got complicated, with the dipping back in at home at the end of each trip away.
So on that basis, as the Dragons say in the Den, I'm out.
But if the simple rules apply then I will stay in, as such!!

It's a shame the way this thread has gone. It doesn't matter which way you do it, dipping your coin will never accurately reflect your mileage (i.e. crow flies v winding road and footpath). Having said that, it was a bit of fun and I can't see what's wrong with following the above "rules". We would still be up for it!

I will only be logging my coin as a 'visit' on any caches I do (the first log will be the first cache I do after Jan 1st, wherever that may be in the country).
If I happen to do a local cache in between the other caches then it will get occassionally get some home mileage.
I haven't used 'auto-visit' yet and can't find any information about it in the GS forums or Knowledge books but I'm guessing that if it is ticked it would 'auto-visit' when you wrote a log entry. :dunno:

OK let's KISS it:
Mileage starts at the first cache the coin owner visits after midnight New Years Eve.
The coin can visit every cache which the coin owner physically visits, for whatever purpose (find, maintenance, re-visit) but only one visit per cache.
Mileage ends with the last cache visited in 2011.
Hows that?
It may not give the actual number of miles that the cacher has travelled, but gives a level playing field for all.

There are more joining by the day which I think is great. I think we will all show the full world Geocaching community how to get together (thats cool we could try an event cache for all GAGB mileage contenders?) Anyway back to topic! I am working on a great report, one of which I am going to be sharing with Jacaru and then we will go from there and see if we can come up with some cool simple stuff.
Also when you register your coins I am going to need to link to your coin so I can bookmark them and grab the milage each week. This will be the most time consuming part but I will enjoy doing it so dont worry about that!

I've been dipping my personal TB (https://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?guid=ac25162f-226d-4061-80de-ce9253b4eac9) since I started caching. Unfortunately, until Groundspeak added the 'visited' option, either the drop or retrieve would log the mileage, so I deleted all the drop logs since I added my find count to the retrieve logs, because I wanted the track to look good in Google Earth.
After Groundspeak added the 'visited' option, only the drop and visit options log mileage, so guess what: my TB lost all its mileage! I've no intention of re-dipping it into almost 1000 caches.....the mileage was wildly out anyway since it could not log my non-Groundspeak finds.....but I don't intend to make a GeoKret and dip that into 1200 caches
I'm up for the GC-only UK-only mileage dipping. :) My activated but as yet unlogged GAGB coin is TB3Y2Y7 (https://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=3226210)

So, to Clarify - Jan 1st dip into nearest cache to home - then simply dip into every cache visited and also dip into any of your own that you maintain.
Can I just ask 1 question, sorry to be a pain, this might not affect a lot of folks if they don't own any but I have rather a lot of Earthcaches of my own, and I do visit the sites sometimes for photography and to check they haven't fallen into the sea etc, do I dip the coin into my Earthcaches if I go there as a maintenance visit or not ? happy either way.:)

Are we having a new thread for this or do you want me to post Week 1 on here?
And on a side note captain gore-tex the coin you have posted has 141k miles on it. I would prefer to come away from doing a calculation for each week on any coin. I would really appreciate it if you had a new coin to play with?
I am not sure I want to say this next part but I am still not 100% on how we are playing? Am I right in saying we just dip our coin into every cache we visit? So the first cache I visit of the new year would be my starting point? Then my second log is the second cache I find?

Every race needs a loser, and as I haven't been caching for ages I should be in with a pretty good chance of getting the wooden spoon! :p

Sorry Jacaru it is possible but would take hours. I would need to make a note of every cache that a person does. And I remember Sandvika saying the other day he bashed out 70 something caches in a single day. If you have 30 players and it will be with Wemnog and everyone does just a single cache per day that would be 210 caches I need to log per week. Unless there is a way of creating a report?

If you get the coin in the first week of the new year it should be fine I think. All you need to have is the first weeks coin visits done by Friday 7th January. I then hope to do the first weeks logs on that night and then every Friday after.
Can you register the coin and then back track your finds for the week?

"Can you register the coin and then back track your finds for the week?"
I don't see this as being a problem, it isn't as if the coins are being left in caches, and it is only fair with the way the post is at the moment.
Now, that's it, I'm off, and it isn't cos I am in NI and due to a lack of water. Going on me hols (yep to do OS out of a job too Dr. D!)

Just a small, nit-picky question...
This competition / tracking race is for caches visited within the UK, isn't it?
Can I just clarify exactly what is the definition of "UK" in the context of this race? :D
Is it "UK and Northern Ireland"?
And if Northern Ireland is included then could the boundaries be "stretched a bit" to also include Southern Ireland too?
In fact, could it encompass The British Isles as a whole?
(I ask because we might be doing a trip through all of Ireland next year :) )
Bill D (wwh)
30th December 2010, 02:12 PM
I think the consensus so far is that all caches in the UK are included, and Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so NI is already included.
Whether the rules are tweaked to include the Republic of Ireland is another matter... :p
svk616g
30th December 2010, 04:21 PM
I think I've kept up with the discussion on the rules, but is it worth having a definitive statement in one place that we can refer to? This is supposed to be fun, and some unambiguous ground rules should help keep it that way.
Something like (with lots of cutting/pasting from other posts):
Jan 1st dip into nearest cache to home - then simply dip into every cache visited (including earthcaches, virtuals, events, your own, revisits to previous finds), but only one visit per cache and you must sign the log (other people's physical caches), fulfil the conditions (other people's earthcaches, virtuals, webcams etc.) or perform maintenance (your own physical or non-physical caches).

Interesting point from Mrs B.
I'd always thought that Great Britain included Northern Ireland, but apparently not, " The term 'Great Britain' (GB or just Britain) refers to the area covered by England, Scotland and Wales." according to this Government website: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/www.direct.gov.uk/en/Hl1/Help/YourQuestions/DG_10015114
However, "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK or United Kingdom for short) is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland."
So, as this is the GAGB - are we only doing GB or is it the whole of the UK?
I.e. do we include Northern Ireland or not?
Either way, I don't think Eire should be included - but that's just my opinion and I'll go with the majority. :)
Jacaru
31st December 2010, 08:27 AM
For me, I always thought that Northern Ireland would be included, just hope there is more available water there when anyone visits. I don't think Eire should be included.
As far as the mileage goes, I had presumed also that everyone would include, IOM, IOW, Channel Islands, Scottish Isles. Anglesey and any of the other off mainland islands.
1 day to go.
DrDick&Vick
31st December 2010, 10:51 AM
I have quoted from Daryl's original post so using his wording as a guide Northern Ireland is ok.
So, as this is the GAGB - are we only doing GB or is it the whole of the UK?
I.e. do we include Northern Ireland or not?
The Home page of the GAGB Web Site does actually say:
The Geocaching Association of Great Britain (GAGB) is the leading UK Geocaching body, recognised by and acting on behalf of cachers. The association was established in 2004 to provide a voice for its members in the United Kingdom
So it would seem that the competition covers the UK

Ha! Unlikely, I would say :p
I don't mind what areas are covered by this race, I just though I should get it clarified before I get carried away "visiting" my coin all over Eire (if we actually get this holiday sorted...)
So... It's going to be the UK and N Ireland, right?

Visit the cache and log a visit :)
Assuming it is already showing as in your possesion, you do it at the same time as logging a visit to that cache (or a note if you forget to do it with your visit log) or a maint log if visiting your own cache for a maint visit to start it off. I thought the rules were that it could only be dipped in a cache that was actually visited.

At the bottom right of the page there is a drop down menu labeled ACTION
use the drop down and select Visited, type in a short message like Coin Dip and the submit Log.

You don't need to discover the coin - It's your own coin. The "Discovered" option is for when you see a trackable item (at an event or in a cache or in the owner's hands) but you don't retrieve it to move it on.

Hello all,
I have gone through all of the posts and think I got all of the information. I may have PMed you as I might have missed off a few.
Today I have done the following:
pieman I can't PM you for some reason asking for your coin info. (If anyone knows pieman please will you ask to send the info, thanks)
Captain gore-tex don't worry about the late arrival of your coin, I can backtrack and figure out your weekly mileage from the list.
Blid435, Redferret, Dan1980, Palujia and Wemnog, also countrymatters and walker clan- I now have your coin information.
Ryuchan I have your coin information but if its okay with you I will put on the graphs Team Noodles so I can match the coin and name up.
scubaclogger, DOSK, zarbi&zarbibird and Stuey - I have added your details and your coin information.
Just another thing as well. A few of the people I have added today seemed to think it maybe a little late to enter but that's not the case. I have noticed a coin shows all entries and the distance between that entry. I have no problem going back over (well for a few weeks, wouldn't fancy doing 6 months worth!) the logs and making a quick calculation.
Thanks everyone

Yes, YOSM not only messes up mileage, but also milestones. I've opted to rename it in GSAK each time I log it so I gave GC45CC-1, GC45CC-2..... each with corrected coordinates of the actual YSMxxx TP visited and log date set to the date of that find.
The upside is that my distances, altitudes and milestones are now correct, the downside is that each now counts as a unique geocache, but I think that's the lesser evil.
Cheers, Roderick

I originally backlogged it to Beachy Head trig point while I did the EC there. I then realized it looked stoopid being in Wales at that time. I also felt like it would be more fun to log it when I am actually at it's active trig for that time.
So decided to delete and relog when I can log it 'live' so to speak, I'll then lock the record. I only plan to find it once any ways.

You can actually download a handy utility that does all of that for you:
http://www.yosm.org.uk/utilities.php
This useful utility by sniffadogz splits the multiple log entries for GC45CC into separate waypoints for each YOSM. Statistic programs such as It'sNotAboutTheNumbers and CacheStats will then treat these as unique caches ensuring the cache count, difficulty & terrain ratings, and counties are correctly calculated.
Simply right-click on your myfinds.zip file and the updated file is produced. Installation and operating instructions are provided in the readme document.

Not sure what to do about Pieman, me may be out of the country for a few days, don't know. How about give him until 10th and if you haven't heard anything then take it that he isn't taking part any more.

By inference, because they don't count in your cache numbers, DNFs don't count, nor do revisits to previously found caches or owned caches.

Thought maintenance visits to your own caches counted..?
But only one visit per cache allowed.

If you are ever near Horsham and doing the Let's go fishing series at Barnes Green, walk past the path for #3 and find the gate with the Campers Only sign. If you look for the GAGB flag and the St Georges Cross windsock and there is a blue Sorento parked next to it, come and have a cuppa with us.
There is even 2 TB's for you to discover.

If anybody wants the challenge images added to their signatures the easy way, send me a PM and tell me which you want adding.
All that have entered are now eligble for the Contest one and those that have made their first log are eligble for the first log one.

I'm not quite sure what the rules are but keeping it simple seems best. For me that means "smiley mileage" i.e. new finds. Hiders of 100 caches will have more maintenance mileage than someone with none, or only a handful. I'll go with the flow on this . . .

Welcome to jaybeez and Al & Tracy Smith!
ThePeckWoods I have put your name down but need your coin details. DrDick if its a GAGB coin will you work your magic and send them the details. Thanks
So by about 8pm tomorrow I will be making a start on the first weeks mileage! I really need to get a cache in before then as I only have one which is my starter. So I will probably be logging 0 miles for the first week.
Pieman hasen't been in touch so I will take him out and then put him back in if he turns up in the coming few weeks.
Cheers all and good luck!

Don't think you'll be the only one with 0 miles for the week!
Unless I can manage something in Liverpool/Warrington area on Friday.

I think that Wemnog is planning on putting a new cache out in the Orford area of Warrington this weekend, so that may be one for you to do. Keep an eye open for it.

Is there any chance of posting the rules / guidelines? Maybe Jacaru can edit his OP so that the rules always appear at the top. If no rules are posted then I am going to cheat and log mileage on holiday in the next couple of weeks. We could have 5000 added by Monday! ;)

Fermentum,
Just a suggestion.... Can the cachers names be arranged alphabetically on the graphs? Makes it a bit easier to pick names out.
All looks very professional, thanks for taking on this:cheers:

Yes, I'd prefer to see names in alphabetical order. Otherwise it's great! :)
Bear and Ragged
8th January 2011, 02:10 PM
And, strictly speaking, for an English speaking country ie. reading from left to right, design-wise, the names are upside down...
But, otherwise, nice graphs!
(Apart from mine reading 0 )
Fermentum
8th January 2011, 08:03 PM
Yeah no problem. The graphs will be in Alphabetical order on Week 2.
And I have changed the upside down text to be the correct way (I was obviously just testing on this one!).
As I have sorted alphabetically the Tracker Graph symbols remain the same so everyone's should change. But the key will point this out anyway.
Keep the suggestions coming.
And thanks to everyone for the great and kind comments.
