Description

Aberdeen City Council does not have a problem with geocaches providing we are consulted prior to placement and that geocaches are placed in accordance with the following.

Where they are on Council land this would be provided that where they are located does not put those looking for them in any danger, eg near steep or slippery banks , where they could be cut off by rising tides etc or where there would be damage caused to the site or its infrastructure.

We would like to know if geocaches are being placed on Council property so those responsible for the management and maintenance of the sites know where they are and don't pick them up as rubbish think they are suspect packages!

It may not be appropriate to encourage people to access some sensitive areas either where the vegetation or soils are easily damaged or eroded or where things like breeding birds would be disturbed.

In some nationally or internationally designated sites there may be a requirement for Scottish Natural Heritage to give their consent too, for example if it is within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (eg Scotstown Moor or Nigg Bay) or within a Special Area for Conservation (eg the River Dee and its tributaries).

Application Process

All our countryside sites are listed on the Aberdeen City Council website at Aberdeen City Council Countryside Ranger Service on the council website and there are also details of the parks and some of the other major greenspace areas. Ian Talboys is the contact for the countryside areas. The other land has various other officers but there are contacts on the websites for the relevant areas.

Here is a link to maps showing the Aberdeen City Local Nature Conservation Sites.

A map overlay (.kml) showing most of the areas covered can be downloaded here.

The map overlays can be downloaded and opened in Google Earth which is a free download for a PC and also as apps for Apple and Android. (N.B. These maps do not form part of any legal representation of land ownership and are created simply as a guide to areas for the purposes of placing a geocache container or marking an area where these are not permitted).
