We recognise that geocaches of all shapes and sizes have their value and add important interest and variety to the game. Smaller caches can be hidden in locations which are unable to accommodate larger boxes, bringing geocachers to beautiful or interesting locations that they may otherwise never have visited.
This campaign does not seek to discourage the placement of nanos, micros, and small containers altogether.
Rather, it aims to encourage the placement of larger geocaches wherever this is possible. For example, if there is a large hollow tree and a magnetic gate at Ground Zero, place an ammo can inside the former instead of a magnetic nano on the latter. Bigger is Better!
Remember, you can order containers which are ready to hide straight away from the GAGB Shop, including tupperware and ammo cans. You can visit the shop here.
Since 2001, the number of Micro caches has increased, and it is now the most common cache size. Whilst a good number of Small caches continue to be placed, the number of Regular containers has declined substantially since 2001. Meanwhile, Large caches have long been the rarest size.
It would be great to see more Small, Regular, and even Large caches being placed where possible, creating more of a balance in terms of cache sizes available to be found, so that the benefits of finding larger containers can be enjoyed. A selection of these benefits are set out below.
Yes! Here are just a few reasons why...
If you place a larger cache, or find a great one, let us know by sending in a photo to socialmedia@gagb.org.uk. Alternatively, you can use the hashtag #BiggerIsBetter when posting your photo on social media, including in Facebook groups. Let’s celebrate those who make the extra effort to place a larger cache over a Micro where this can be done! We’d also love to hear the reasons why you think Bigger is Better!
We may share photos on our channels and in Seeker as part of the campaign.
We are currently running a quiz to help kick off the Bigger is Better campaign, with a GAGB ammo can (ready to hide) as the grand prize.
Identify all the UK Cities and Towns, and you will get a codeword. Make sure you send this to socialmedia@gagb.org.uk as soon as possible - the first to do so wins! You can complete the quiz here.
Good luck!
Seeker the Squirrel, the GAGB's mascot, is a fan of larger geocaches and a big supporter of Bigger is Better!
