Description

Forestry and Land Scotland will allow the placing of geocaches on the National Forest Estate, subject to the following conditions:

- All visitors must behave responsibly, in accordance with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and any Scottish Government Covid-19 guidance or law in place at the time of their visit;

- Please Keep it Clean and help stop the spread of tree diseases;

- The placement of the geocache must be non-destructive and non-invasive (e.g. to trees, other plants, structures, wildlife habitat);

- The placement of the geocache must present no increase in the risk of subsequent damage by erosion at or on the approaches to the location;

- Geocachers should consider the additional hazards unstable trees may present: do not place caches directly under windblown or hanging trees or where trees show signs of significant decay. Do consider the safety of those coming to find your cache;

- The geocache can be reached primarily by using established paths/trails & access points;

- There is no risk of disturbance to protected bird, animal or plant life;

- Forestry And Land Scotland reserves the right to remove any geocache if it deems necessary;

- Geocachers should understand that the cache may be unavoidably damaged in the course of forestry or other operations. The cache owner may wish to monitor their cache occasionally;

- If you have any concern about the sensitivity of your chosen site, get in touch with the local Forest Region Office, to discuss it;

- All geocaches placed on Scotland's National Forests and land should meet GAGB general guidelines and all geocachers must adhere to the GAGB Code of Conduct;

- When the geocache is on or near a FLS promoted trail network, any areas which have to be closed (e.g. for forest operations or events) will be highlighted on the FLS Website and/or on the ground. All visitors, including geocachers, must observe all warning and prohibition signs;

- No vehicle access is permitted beyond the public highway or dedicated parking places. Vehicles must be parked sensibly and must not block forest entrances as these provide emergency access to the forest;
- Forestry and Land Scotland reserves the right to remove any geocache if it deems necessary;
- Forestry And Land Scotland will not monitor or maintain any caches hidden on the National Forest Estate.

The map overlays can be downloaded and opened in Google Earth which is a free download for a PC and also as apps for Apple and Android. (N.B. These maps do not form part of any legal representation of land ownership and are created simply as a guide to areas for the purposes of placing a geocache container or marking an area where these are not permitted).

No application is required to place a cache or to practice geocaching as an informal activity.

However, geocaching events require written permission and will be subject to the standard recreation permission and charging process. Contact the relevant Forest Region Office to apply.
